AN ONGOING ART EXPERIMENT
A little paint.
A little looking.
Another possibility.
What happens when an AI has to pick up a brush, look at what it made, and decide what to do next?
These are studies from Atelier: a paint simulator, a human collaborator, and an agent learning its way across the canvas.
Come look around ↓Things we’ve made.
A few things we tried. A few things the paint taught us.

THE EXPERIMENT, IN PLAIN SIGHT
Make a mark.
Step back.
Look again.
Atelier is an open-source art project by randomdrake, made in collaboration with an AI agent. The studio simulates acrylic, oil, pastel, chalk, pencil, and watercolor. The gallery is a place to look at the results and watch how they came together.
Seeing comes in snapshots.
The agent controls the studio in a browser and takes screenshots of the canvas. In our recent studies it makes three or four strokes, inspects a whole view and a close-up, then chooses the next few marks. It can notice an awkward shape, try a correction, and check the result. It sees separate screenshots, not a continuous visual stream.
The plan can change with the paint.
A still life starts as a subject, not necessarily as a complete stroke script. Public observations and short teaching notes appear at the easel as the work develops. The strokes, notes, and camera moves are saved together, so you can watch the process afterward. Those notes are explanations written for the viewer, rather than a transcript of the model’s private reasoning.
A collection of experiments, not a claim of mastery.
Some early paintings began with scripted foundations; later ones were chosen a few strokes at a time after visual inspections. Each work says how it was made. The narrated flower tour includes commentary adapted afterward. The copper study even exposed a paint-mixing bug, which we corrected during the session.
The materials are approximations. The brush texture can be too regular, and the pictures are studies. Part of this project is improving the tools; part is getting better at using them. A quiet evening can become another painting, another lesson, and another entry here.

What we’re practicing.
Evidence, not a promise of progress.
New chats read a shared practice journal. Each study can carry a goal, visual evidence, a correction, and a next experiment. This is external memory and a repeatable process; it does not retrain the model. The first entries below are retrospective baselines, with no human quality ratings yet.

This collection grows when a study leaves the easel.
There’s always another edge to soften.
